E-mail To Kings

Dear Sam,

Our names are Macu, Jeffery, Joshua and Ethan.  We are in Room 21’s All Boys Class at Elm Park Primary.

Thank you for sending us your letter about pollution.  We really enjoyed reading your letter and found it really interesting. We learned about the hole in the Ozone Layer above New Zealand.  Now we realise that we need to wear lots more sunscreen than what we normally wear.

In Room 21, we have been learning about soils. We were learning about soil because the United Nations declared 2015 “The International Year Of Soils”.  Did you know that soils are one of the four natural elements we need to survive? Without soils we would not be able to survive.

There are three main types of soil and they are sand, silt and clay.  Soils are made up of 45% minerals, 50% pore space and 5% organic matter (dead leaves and plants).

Soils have many different uses other than just growing food. They help to regulate the Earth’s climate by storing carbon in it.  Soil helps suck in water so we don’t have lots of major flooding. They are the key to our agricultural life.  Lastly, soils are used to make 60% of our cancer drugs!

Thank you for reading our letter.  We hope that you have learned a lot about soils from us. So remember to not take soils for granted.

Yours Sincerely.

Macu, Jeffery, Joshua and Ethan

Year 6 Team Building Activity

At the end of this Term we took part in a Year 6 Team building challenge in the Auditorium.  We had to work together to build a bridge that was wide enough for a ball to pass through and strong enough to hold a dictionary.

Our bridge, `The Bull Bridge` held seven dictionaries, let a ball pass through and won.

About The Artist

About the Artist

Joshua is 10 years old.  He lives in Pakuranga, Auckland.  Joshua has been attending Elm Park School for six years and is now a Year 6 student.  He was born on the 25th January 2005.  His family comes from all of the world, although his close family lives in Auckland.

Joshua’s favorite of painting the eye was mixing the colours because mixing them was the most challenging part.  During this process Joshua learnt how to blend, mix, shade and tint colours.  These skills came in handy when he had to make the colours of the iris.

The school values that he used were perseverance, independence, initiative and quality.  To get work to an exceptional standard he had to try many times by himself.

His dream is to become a Civil Engineer.

Learning Reflection

I am learning to write in the third person.
I am so proud of being able to write in the third person.
It can be tricky to always remember to write in the third
person.
A teacher or a buddy could help me with this writing.
The next step for me might be to write in the second person.
